18 year old X30 Senior Kart racer Harry Cottrell started racing in Feb 2018 winning the coveted TVKC X30 Junior Rookie Trophy. Harry is an elite motorsport athlete racing with the World’s best at the UK’s top circuit, PFi & around the country.
Harry’s first taste of karting was at a corporate track although he started relatively late at the age of 12. Within a few months he’d joined the S8 Racing team and quickly passed his ARKS test to start a ‘proper’ karting career initially in Mini X30. Things then moved at a really quick pace. His first race was just six weeks after first sitting in an X30 kart and at the monthly TVKC Championship at PF International on a joint grid with the LGM Championship ….. and in the wet! It was a challenging day, but he went home with the Novice Trophy. After an intensive series of races over the summer he was back at PFi for the Kartmasters Grand Prix just four months after his first race where he finished 12th in the final. He finished 2018 with the Junior Rookie of the Year award from the TVKC.
By comparison 2019 was a relatively steady year with Harry refining his racecraft and improving his speed with the expert help of Alex Short and Jim Thornsby at S8 and the watchful eye of karting legend Terry Fullerton. This followed a move to the Junior X30 class and included racing at PFi, Kimbolton, Whilton Mill and Shenington enjoy some good race results and occasional fastest lap.
2020 & Lockdown
Harry began his eSports career at Easter by entering the MSUK Karting eSports Championship – Easter Series which was organized by Alpha Live with KartSim and Motorsport Games. Despite having little experience in eSports kart racing Harry was able to show some good pace and qualified for the race events in 6th place out of around 120 drivers. He went on to finish 4th in his Semi-Final and 11th in the Final racing around a virtual GYG and PF International.
This gave him some confidence to look at what else he could compete in online. On the back of his real life racing experience and his initial eSports success he was accepted to compete in an April charity event in F3 cars on the iRacing simulator platform – Race for the NHS. The one off event held at virtual Silverstone featured at grid of over fifty British racing drivers, many from the top championships including F1 star Alex Albon. Harry’s impressive performance in the event allowed to be included in the new UK F3 Sim Championship beginning in May where he was able to secure podium finishes in the first two races.
The biggest challenge to date in eSports was getting through the qualification stage for the new top level Isolation eRacing Series which is being broadcast on national television in May and June. This series features some of the top racing drivers from around the world including F1’s Lando Norris in the first event.
Plans for 2021 are for Harry to continue with the championships at PFi and Kimbolton and enter the Motorsport UK British Kart Championship. He’s really looking forward to competing in a national championship and racing at some new circuits.
